Indonesia ASRI Movement in Karawang: Local Government Strengthens Clean and Orderly City Appearance
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KARAWANG — The Karawang Regency Government held an environmental clean-up action to support the Indonesia ASRI (Safe, Healthy, Clean, and Beautiful) Movement on Friday (8/5/2026). The action involved government elements and the community.
The event, themed ‘Together Realise a Clean, Healthy, and Beautiful Karawang’, was centred along Jalan Arif Rahman Hakim, the Karawang Railway Station area, to Jalan Tuparev or the Karawang Town Square area.
Several road sections, waterways, pavements, parks, and public facilities were targeted for cleaning and tidying. The activities included rubbish collection, public area organisation, and environmental improvements to create a more orderly, clean, and comfortable urban atmosphere for the community.
The event involved all regional apparatus organisations (OPD), sub-district governments, and community elements who directly participated in the field. This collaboration aimed to build an environmental care culture while strengthening the spirit of mutual cooperation among the community.
The Indonesia ASRI Movement is a national programme launched by President Prabowo Subianto at the beginning of 2026. The programme is directed towards creating a safe, healthy, clean, and beautiful environment through more integrated environmental management.
In addition to environmental clean-up activities, the programme encompasses integrated waste management, greening of areas, public space organisation, and routine community work in village, sub-district, and urban areas.
The Secretary of Karawang Regency, Asep Aang Rahmatullah, stated that the Indonesia ASRI Movement is a step by the local government to improve the environmental quality and the face of Karawang City.
“This movement aims to create a Karawang that is safe, healthy, clean, and beautiful, thereby enhancing the quality of life for the community while strengthening the environmental attractiveness in Karawang Regency,” he said.
He explained that the implementation of the Indonesia ASRI Movement does not only focus on environmental clean-up activities but also encourages sustainable waste management from the source. Additionally, the regulation of billboards and illegal advertisements, as well as the tidying of overhead cables that are considered to disrupt the city’s aesthetics, are being carried out.
Asep Aang assessed that the success of the Indonesia ASRI Movement requires synergy between the central government, local government, and the community so that a culture of maintaining cleanliness can grow consistently throughout the region.
“The success of this programme cannot be achieved by the government alone, but requires involvement and collective awareness from all community elements,” he said.
The Head of the Environmental Agency (DLH) of Karawang Regency, Asep Suryana, invited the community to get into the habit of managing waste from the source and maintaining environmental cleanliness in daily life.
According to him, the involvement of all regional apparatus and the community becomes the main strength in building collective awareness to keep the environment clean, healthy, and comfortable.
“Through the Indonesia ASRI Movement, we want to foster an environmental care culture and the spirit of mutual cooperation among the community, so that Karawang can become an increasingly clean, healthy, orderly, and comfortable area for all residents,” he said.
