Indonesia Appreciates UK's Recognition of Palestine

Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono has expressed appreciation for the British Government’s stance in recognising the State of Palestine and supporting the realisation of a two-state solution. “Our shared task now is to align that recognition with genuine efforts to protect civilians, ensure humanitarian aid access, and realise the two-state solution,” Sugiono said in an official statement received in Jakarta on Thursday. During the ASEAN-UK Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Sugiono assessed that the United Kingdom bears a special responsibility as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council to promote a just and sustainable peace. He stated that Southeast Asian nations are ready to support the UK in achieving this, reflected in ASEAN’s consistent approach to promoting peaceful dialogue and inter-state cooperation. “Consistency is a tangible manifestation of credibility. This consistency is also what ASEAN offers the world: a platform for collaboration, not an arena for rivalry,” Sugiono remarked. The meeting’s documents will serve as a reference for strengthening ASEAN-UK cooperation, including in the fields of peace and security, combating transnational crime, green transition, connectivity, and human resource development. At the meeting, UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband reaffirmed the UK’s long-term commitment to enhancing cooperation with ASEAN, while calling for peaceful resolutions to international disputes. The British Government described the recognition as part of its commitment to preserving the prospects of a two-state solution. Its aims include stopping the war in Gaza, ending the construction of illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, and encouraging internal reform on the Palestinian side.
