Indonesia and UK Strengthen Cooperation, Explore Economic and Investment Potential

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto received a visit from UK Trade Commissioner for Asia Pacific Martin Kent in Jakarta on Tuesday (28/7/2026). The meeting discussed various efforts to strengthen the positive economic partnership between Indonesia and the United Kingdom, as well as strategic steps to expand collaboration across various economic sectors of mutual interest.

On the occasion, Airlangga congratulated the new UK government under the leadership of Prime Minister Andy Burnham. He expressed hope that the strategic relationship between Indonesia and the UK would grow closer, in line with the commitment of both nations to continuously strengthen economic cooperation. Support was also conveyed for the implementation process of the Indonesia-UK Economic Growth Partnership (EGP), which was signed last January.

Airlangga outlined several of Indonesia’s priorities in implementing the EGP, which include strengthening cooperation in human resource development, energy, investment, and the transition towards a more sustainable economy. ‘These various initiatives are expected to strengthen economic collaboration between the two countries while supporting inclusive and sustainable growth,’ Airlangga stated.

Airlangga also provided an update on Indonesia’s accession process to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). ‘Indonesia’s participation in the CPTPP is part of a strategy to expand market access, strengthen supply chain resilience, and support sustainable economic growth,’ he added.

In line with this, the UK Government reaffirmed its support for Indonesia’s CPTPP accession process. The UK views Indonesia’s participation as a move that will further strengthen the CPTPP’s role as a high-standard trade agreement, while increasing its relevance in the Indo-Pacific region.

Closing the meeting, Airlangga emphasised that the economic relationship between Indonesia and the UK still holds significant opportunities for further strengthening. To this end, the Indonesian Government is ready to continue close cooperation with the UK Government, both through the implementation of the EGP and support for Indonesia’s CPTPP accession process.
