Indonesia and Singapore Sign MoU on Environmental Protection Cooperation

The governments of Indonesia and Singapore have officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on environmental protection and comprehensive bilateral cooperation to address environmental challenges.

The agreement was led by Indonesia’s Minister of Environment and Head of the Environmental Control Agency, Moh Jumhur Hidayat, and Singapore’s Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, Grace Fu.

“Today we signed an MoU with the Singapore government, which will certainly be followed up with more operational cooperation. So, this MoU serves as an umbrella for cooperation, and there will be many joint activities later, for example related to climate change, waste management, air pollution, including how to deal with the El Niño phenomenon which is predicted to last longer,” said Minister Jumhur.

He expressed Indonesia’s strong commitment to continue building regional collaboration amidst the increasingly complex dynamics of the planetary crisis.

He noted there are many areas in the environmental sector where collaboration can be built with Indonesia, such as the circular economy, waste management, environmental management, transboundary pollution control, and climate change.

“I hope the signing of this MoU marks the beginning of many dialogues and cooperation, both at the government and private sector levels, so that both countries can focus on implementation and concrete areas of cooperation,” said Minister Grace Fu.

With the signing, the Ministry of Environment and Environmental Control Agency has ensured that this cooperation will not stop at a document on the table. A series of real actions will soon be executed by both countries.

The scope of this collaboration covers vital issues, ranging from accelerating the circular economy, modern waste management, maintaining water and air quality, to controlling transboundary pollution.

In addition, the Ministry will also focus on developing human resource capacity to better prepare for the new era of a low-carbon economy.

To realise this vision, Indonesia and Singapore will regularly conduct technical personnel exchanges, launch joint research, and build environmentally friendly and sustainable pilot projects. The ease of technology transfer between the two countries will also be ensured to accelerate environmental management innovation.
