Indonesia and Seven Countries Condemn Hoisting of Israeli Flag at Al-Aqsa Mosque
Indonesia, together with seven Muslim-majority countries, has condemned the actions of Israeli settlers who stormed and hoisted the Israeli flag at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, Palestine. Indonesia described the incident as a violation.
“The Foreign Ministers of Indonesia, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates condemned the repeated violations by the Israeli occupying authorities of the historical and legal status quo at the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, particularly the ongoing attacks by settlers and Israeli extremist ministers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram Al-Sharif under Israeli police protection, as well as the hoisting of the Israeli flag in its courtyard,” stated the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its official website on Friday (24/4/2026).
Indonesia and the foreign ministers of those countries described the provocative actions at the Al-Aqsa Mosque as a clear violation of international law and international humanitarian law. They also regarded it as an unacceptable provocation to Muslims around the world and a serious violation of the sanctity of the holy city.
“The ministers reaffirmed their firm rejection of any attempts to change the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and the Islamic and Christian holy sites, and emphasised the importance of preserving that status, recognising the special historical role of the Hashemite custodianship in this regard,” stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Indonesia, along with the foreign ministers, stated that the entire 144-dunum area of the Al-Aqsa Mosque is a place of worship exclusively for Muslims. The Jerusalem Waqf Department and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs, affiliated with Jordan’s Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, is the legal entity with exclusive jurisdiction to manage the affairs of the Al-Aqsa Mosque or Al-Haram Al-Sharif and regulate access to it.
“The Ministers also condemned the acceleration of illegal settlement activities, including Israel’s decision to approve more than 30 new settlements, which is a clear violation of international law, including UN Security Council resolutions and the 2024 International Court of Justice advisory opinion,” stated the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The foreign ministers also condemned the ongoing and escalating violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank, including attacks on schools and Palestinian children. The foreign ministers called for those responsible to be held accountable.
“The ministers affirmed that Israel has no sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territory. The ministers also firmly rejected any attempts to annex the Occupied Palestinian Territory or forcibly displace Palestinians,” stated the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Indonesia, together with those seven countries, stated that Israel’s actions constitute a deliberate and direct assault on the viability of the Palestinian state and on the implementation of the two-state solution, heightening tensions, undermining peace efforts, and obstructing ongoing de-escalation initiatives. The Foreign Ministers called on the international community to uphold its legal and moral responsibilities and urged Israel to halt the dangerous escalation in the West Bank.
“Calling on the international community to intensify all regional and international efforts to promote a political solution to achieve comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution. The ministers reaffirmed their full support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, particularly the right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent State of Palestine based on the 4 June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital,” stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
