Indonesia and Sarawak Affirm Commitment to Strengthen Cooperation Across Various Fields
Indonesia and the Malaysian state of Sarawak have affirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in various fields to provide tangible benefits to the communities in both regions. The commitment was made during a courtesy call by Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia Raden Dato’ Mohammad Iman Hascarya Kusumo on the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, in Sarawak, Malaysia, on Monday.
Ambassador Iman expressed appreciation to the Sarawak government for the friendly relations and cooperation that have been well-established so far. He expressed hope that strategic synergy in various fields could continue to be enhanced to deliver real benefits to the people in both regions. The Ambassador was accompanied by the Indonesian Consul General in Kuching, Abdullah Zulkifli.
The Indonesian Consulate General in Kuching stated that the visit affirmed a shared commitment to continue strengthening Indonesia-Sarawak relations, which are built not only through intergovernmental cooperation but also underpinned by historical, cultural, and people-to-people ties in the Borneo/Kalimantan region.
During the meeting, the Indonesian Ambassador also conveyed various national development priorities under the leadership of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, including a commitment to sustainable development. The Indonesian government continues to encourage responsible and environmentally sound mining practices as part of efforts to preserve nature for future generations. In line with this, Ambassador Iman assessed that Indonesia and Sarawak have significant opportunities to share experiences and strengthen collaboration in the green economy, environmentally friendly industries, and future technology development.
He also presented several national priority programmes, such as the Free Nutritious Meal Programme (MBG), Sekolah Rakyat (People’s Schools), hospital construction, and the continued development of the Nusantara Capital City (IKN). The meeting also discussed various strategic issues of mutual interest, including the protection of Indonesian migrant workers (PMI), improving access to education for Indonesian children through Community Learning Centres (CLC), strengthening trade and investment, developing connectivity, managing border areas, cooperation in environmental conservation, and strengthening the Malaysia-Indonesia Socio-Economic Cooperation (Sosek Malindo) mechanism.
Both parties agreed to continue strengthening communication, enhancing coordination between relevant agencies, and following up on various cooperation opportunities through technical meetings and collaborative programmes that provide tangible benefits to communities in both regions in the future. Also present at the meeting was the Director of the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who also serves as the Director of the Sarawak Regional Office, Hendy Assan.
