Indonesia and Russia are strengthening strategic cooperation in various sectors following the signing of the Indonesia-Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement (I-EAEU FTA) in December 2024.

Deputy for Coordinating Economic and Investment Cooperation at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Edi Prio Pambudi, emphasised the importance of bolstering strategic collaboration between the two countries to address global challenges while capitalising on the post-FTA momentum to drive more concrete cooperation.

“Indonesia is committed to continuously strengthening its partnership with Russia, particularly in ensuring food security, including through cooperation on fertiliser raw material supplies, expanding market access for agricultural products, and utilising technology for modernising the agricultural sector,” said Deputy Edi during the Expert Dialogue titled “Global Trade Challenges and Strategic Cooperation,” quoted in Jakarta on Friday.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Deputy for Economic Development, Vladimir Illichev, reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to expanding economic partnerships with Indonesia through strengthened cooperation in strategic sectors and enhanced trade connectivity.

“The active participation of the business sector plays a very important role in strengthening economic relations between Russia and Indonesia. We encourage business actors from both countries to continue exploring mutually beneficial cooperation opportunities that contribute meaningfully to economic growth,” said Deputy Illichev.

The dialogue highlighted increasingly complex global challenges, ranging from supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions to heightened competition over strategic resources.

In this context, both countries view strengthened cooperation as crucial for maintaining economic stability and enhancing national resilience.

Additionally, the transformation of global supply chains is seen as opening new collaboration opportunities, including in food self-sufficiency and renewable new energy.

Indonesia and Russia are considered to have complementary comparative advantages, both in terms of natural resources, industrial capacity, and technological mastery.

Future cooperation, according to Illichev, will not only focus on trade but also encompass the development of joint projects, investments, technology transfer, and strengthening research and innovation to promote value-added industrialisation.

Concluding the dialogue, both parties agreed that the forum serves as a strategic platform to enhance synergy among governments, businesses, and academics in formulating concrete future steps.

“Through this dialogue, Indonesia is pushing for more concrete and results-oriented cooperation, actively involving the business sector, academics, and other stakeholders, to produce innovative solutions and strengthen the economic resilience of both countries amid global dynamics,” Edi concluded.
