JAKARTA (ANTARA) – Indonesia and Peru are exploring bilateral cooperation on halal certification and mutual recognition of foreign halal certificates through a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA).

BPJPH Chief Ahmad Haikal Hasan believes Peru has significant potential to develop its national halal industry, particularly amid rising global demand for halal products.

‘In Latin America, Brazil is already a major player in the global halal industry. Peru also has substantial potential to follow suit if it begins strengthening its national halal ecosystem now,’ Haikal stated in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Haikal added that strengthened halal cooperation between Indonesia and Peru would open up broader trade opportunities for both nations.

He also emphasised that Indonesia, with over 250 million halal-conscious consumers, is a key global hub for halal industry growth and ready to be a strategic partner for friendly nations in developing halal ecosystems.

‘BPJPH is open to dialogue and cooperation with any country to advance the global halal ecosystem. Halal is a universal language of quality, cleanliness, and consumer trust,’ Haikal said.

Furthermore, BPJPH stated that Indonesia will enter a crucial phase in implementing full halal certification obligations from 18 October 2026, specifically for food and beverage products, halal meat products, and slaughter services as mandated by the Halal Product Assurance regulation.

‘Whether through foreign halal registration mechanisms or cooperation with foreign halal certification bodies for mutual recognition of certificates,’ he added.
