Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Lebanon have strongly condemned the attack on UNIFIL peacekeeping troops in southern Lebanon that resulted in the death of an Indonesian UNIFIL peacekeeper.

According to a post on the official social media account of the Indonesian Foreign Minister on X, monitored online in Jakarta on Tuesday (31/3), Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono held a telephone conversation with Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi on Monday (30/3) to convey Indonesia’s deep concern following the recent incident.

“We strongly condemn the attack and emphasise that the safety and security of UN peacekeeping troops must be fully respected at all times, in accordance with international law,” the Indonesian Foreign Minister wrote.

Sugiono also stated that both sides agreed to maintain close coordination and follow up on necessary measures, while supporting efforts to de-escalate tensions and maintain regional stability.

Meanwhile, Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi expressed condolences over the death of the Indonesian soldier who fell while carrying out his duties with UNIFIL in southern Lebanon, according to a post on his official X account monitored online on Tuesday.

“I strongly condemn the attack and commend the sacrifice of the Indonesian contingent and their ongoing efforts, together with UN peacekeeping troops, to maintain security and stability in the south,” the Lebanese Foreign Minister said.

Youssef Raggi also conveyed thanks and appreciation for Indonesia’s role in the UNIFIL peacekeeping force, noting that the young soldier deserves recognition as a fallen peacekeeper.
