Indonesia and Japan are strengthening bilateral cooperation in the environmental sector through the organisation of the 2nd Indonesia-Japan Environment Week. This forum serves as an effort by both countries to deepen collaboration in addressing increasingly complex global environmental challenges.

This event is the second iteration, following the first Indonesia-Japan Environment Week held in Tokyo, Japan, in 2024. The government views the forum as a strategic space to strengthen policy synergies and the implementation of sustainable environmental programmes.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLH) states that environmental cooperation between Indonesia and Japan has been active and has evolved into concrete partnerships in addressing various environmental issues. Erik Teguh Primiantoro, Special Staff for International Relations and Environmental Diplomacy at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, said that relations between the two countries continue to develop in line with the increasing need for adaptive environmental solutions.

“Indonesia-Japan cooperation is not only technical but also strategic in driving the transformation of sustainable environmental management. Japan’s experience and technology, combined with Indonesia’s potential and needs, form a great strength to produce real solutions,” said Erik Teguh in his statement on Monday (11/5/2026).

Doi Kentaro, Deputy Minister for Global Environmental Affairs at Japan’s Ministry of Environment, expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening environmental cooperation and promoting various sustainable initiatives.

“We are delighted to build a better future together. We extend our appreciation to the Indonesian Government and all stakeholders for their outstanding commitment and efforts in promoting various environmental initiatives. This year marks an important milestone in strengthening cooperation, particularly in developing innovative environmental solutions,” said Doi Kentaro.

The forum encourages the exchange of knowledge, capacity building, and the development of environmentally friendly technologies that can be widely applied. The focus of cooperation includes waste management, climate change control, air quality improvement, and strengthening the circular economy.

The government assesses that collaboration with Japan opens opportunities to accelerate the adoption of green technology and the development of environmentally friendly industries in Indonesia. This step is seen as aligned with national targets to reduce environmental burdens while promoting green economic growth.

The 2nd Indonesia-Japan Environment Week forum also brings together government, business actors, academics, and development partners to strengthen cross-sector coordination in supporting the sustainable development agenda.

The government hopes that Indonesia-Japan cooperation can continue to be expanded to the field implementation stage to provide real impacts on improving environmental quality in both countries.
