Indonesia and Japan ready to strengthen partnership for the Indo-Pacific future
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Japan are prepared to strengthen their strategic partnership in economic and maritime fields to address increasingly complex global dynamics, particularly to realise a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
According to an official statement from the Indonesian Presidential Secretariat received in Jakarta on Tuesday, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi emphasised that in the face of increasingly challenging international situations, the partnership with Indonesia has become even more strategic, especially in realising a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
The Japanese Prime Minister also appreciated the intensive discussions conducted with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto across various areas of cooperation.
“It is very good that intensive discussions have been held with President Prabowo covering various fields and confirmation has been made on cooperative relations to make this region stronger and more prosperous,” said Prime Minister Takaichi in a statement following the meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Akasaka Palace in Tokyo today.
In the economic field, Prime Minister Takaichi conveyed that both countries have agreed to strengthen concrete cooperation, including support for the development of Indonesian industries and the enhancement of human resource capacity.
“Sustained support for the development of Indonesian industries and cooperation in human resource development, including the AI sector,” stated Prime Minister Takaichi.
Additionally, Prime Minister Takaichi noted that cooperation is also being expanded to the maritime sector and disaster management, given that both countries are maritime nations vulnerable to natural disasters.
“As two maritime countries vulnerable to natural disasters, agreement has been reached on maritime cooperation, including the promotion of the fisheries industry and strengthening cooperation in disaster risk management, including flood control measures,” she said.
The two leaders also expressed the importance of collaboration in resource and energy management. Prime Minister Takaichi mentioned agreements on critical minerals and energy, including through the Agent Zero Emission Community Initiative (AZEC) framework, which will continue to be promoted in implementation.
In the security field, Japan and Indonesia have agreed to strengthen cooperation through support for enhancing naval capacity and maritime security. Prime Minister Takaichi also highlighted developments in defence cooperation between the two countries.
“We welcome the fact that following the 2 plus 2 meeting last year, discussions on arrangements for defence cooperation between defence authorities are ongoing. Through these efforts, our two countries will cooperate to further promote peace and stability in the region and the world,” Prime Minister Takaichi continued.
Furthermore, the two countries also exchanged views on various regional and global issues, including the situation in the Middle East, the South China Sea, and responses to North Korea. Prime Minister Takaichi affirmed that close cooperation between Indonesia and Japan is important, particularly in maintaining regional stability and global energy resilience.
In addition, Prime Minister Takaichi appreciated Indonesia’s solidarity, including the annual commemoration in Sumatra of the Great East Japan Earthquake disaster. Prime Minister Takaichi emphasised the importance of strengthening communication between the leaders of the two countries as the foundation for long-term relations.
“With increasingly close communication between leaders and Foreign Ministers, the comprehensive and strategic partnership of our two countries, supported by heart-to-heart bonds, will be further developed,” she explained.
With aligned visions and concrete commitments, Japan and Indonesia are now stepping forward together in the Indo-Pacific to build a more stable, secure, and prosperous future for the region and the world.
