Indonesia and Japan Officially Sign Cooperation Agreement on Civil Nuclear Energy and Critical Minerals
Indonesia and Japan have reached a significant agreement in the renewable energy sector. The two countries have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding the development of civil nuclear energy for the future.
The meeting between President-elect Prabowo Subianto and Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae in Tokyo laid the foundation for strengthening this sector. Charge d’Affaires of the Japanese Embassy in Jakarta, Mitsuru Myochin, mentioned that two important agreements have been signed by both parties.
“Actually, there are two MoUs that have been signed. One is about critical minerals and the other is about civil nuclear energy between Japan and Indonesia,” said Myochin in Jakarta on Thursday (23/04/2026).
This step is taken to strengthen national energy resilience amid uncertain global geopolitical situations. The civil nuclear cooperation is expected to provide a solution for clean energy needs for industries in the country.
Japan, with its long experience in nuclear technology, will provide technical support to Indonesia. Both leaders agreed that energy transition is a top priority within the framework of bilateral economic cooperation.
“Both leaders discussed, including civil nuclear cooperation. This is done considering the current situation in Iran, so it is necessary to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector,” said Myochin, explaining the background of the agreement.
In addition to nuclear, both countries are also focusing on geothermal power plant projects and waste processing into energy. These projects fall under the Asia Zero Emission Community initiative launched by Japan.
Energy supply chains such as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) will also deepen their collaboration to ensure supply stability. Indonesia and Japan have agreed to maintain energy security amid global commodity price fluctuations.
“Both leaders agreed to deepen collaboration to strengthen the supply chain, including energy resources such as LNG. Both leaders agreed to advance cooperation under the Asia zero emission community initiative,” he added.
