Indonesia and Japan Officially Sign Civil Nuclear Energy Cooperation Agreement
The Indonesian government and Japan have reached a significant agreement in the renewable new energy sector. The two countries have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding the development of civil nuclear energy for the future.
This is the result of a meeting between Prabowo Subianto and Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae in Tokyo some time ago. The Chargé d’Affaires of the Japanese Embassy in Jakarta, Mitsuru Myochin, stated that civil nuclear energy is part of two important agreements signed by both parties.
“Actually, there are two MoUs that have been signed. One is about critical minerals and the other is about civil nuclear energy between Japan and Indonesia,” said Myochin in Jakarta on Thursday (23/04/2026).
This step is taken to strengthen national energy resilience amid uncertain global geopolitical situations. Civil nuclear energy cooperation is expected to provide a solution for the country’s industrial clean energy needs.
Japan, with its long experience in nuclear technology, will provide technical support to Indonesia. Both leaders agreed that energy transition is a top priority within the framework of bilateral economic cooperation.
“The two leaders discussed, including civil nuclear energy cooperation. This is done considering the current situation in Iran, so it is necessary to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector,” said Myochin, explaining the background of the agreement.
In addition to nuclear, the two countries are also focusing on geothermal power plant projects and waste processing into energy. These projects fall under Japan’s Asia Zero Emission Community initiative.
Energy supply chains such as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) will also deepen their collaboration to ensure supply stability. Indonesia and Japan have agreed to maintain energy security amid global commodity price fluctuations.
“The two leaders agreed to deepen collaboration to strengthen the supply chain, including energy resources such as LNG. The two leaders agreed to advance cooperation under the Asia Zero Emission Community initiative,” he added.
