President Prabowo Subianto engaged in several cooperative initiatives during his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. One of them involved discussing disaster mitigation efforts, including floods.

“Furthermore, as fellow maritime nations and countries prone to disasters, we have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the maritime sector, including fisheries development, as well as disaster mitigation cooperation such as flood management,” said Takaichi during a joint press statement with Prabowo following their bilateral meeting at Akasaka Palace in Tokyo, Japan, on Tuesday (31/3/2026).

Takaichi then referenced the tsunami and major earthquake that struck Aceh several years ago. Similarly, the eastern region of Japan has experienced massive earthquakes, with the events commemorated annually.

“In Sumatra, Indonesia, which experienced a major earthquake and tsunami, annual commemorations are also held for the Great East Japan Earthquake. We greatly appreciate this,” she stated.

On the same occasion, Takaichi said her government discussed cooperation regarding energy security perspectives. This cooperative step is being taken in light of the intensifying US-Israel-Iran war situation.

“In addition, with the situation in Iran, the importance of resource and energy security has once again been recognised worldwide,” Takaichi remarked.

According to her, Indonesia is a country rich in energy and mineral resources. She noted that Indonesia and Japan have already signed a memorandum of understanding related to critical minerals and nuclear energy.
