The Indonesian government, through the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with representatives from Ireland to develop cooperation between the two nations on Friday (4/9/2026).

Representing the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs was the Deputy for Coordination of Economic Cooperation and Investment, Edi Prio Pambudi. Representing Ireland was the Ambassador of Ireland to Indonesia, Timor-Leste, and ASEAN, Sharon Lennon.

According to Edi, the signing of the LoI with Ireland is significant for the economic relations of both countries, particularly as this year marks 40 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Ireland.

“We view this document (LoI) as an important foundation for translating various shared priorities when cooperation is contributed by the government, the business world, and relevant institutions in both countries,” Edi stated during a press conference on Friday (4/9/2026).

Over the past 42 years, the Indonesia-Ireland partnership has continued to grow across trade, investment, education, and people-to-people relations.

He explained that bilateral trade relations between Indonesia and Ireland are showing positive momentum. In 2025, total trade between Indonesia and Ireland reached US$ 228.6 million. Meanwhile, during the period from January to July 2026, bilateral trade reached US$ 145.5 million, an increase compared to the same period in 2025.

However, these figures only reflect a portion of the economic potential between Indonesia and Ireland that was discussed.

“In today’s dialogue, we discussed various fields with strong potential for mutually beneficial cooperation, specifically digital technology and AI, renewable energy and clean technology, sustainable finance, agri-food and nutrition, pharmaceuticals and healthcare, as well as aviation and related services,” Edi explained.

Edi noted that Ireland has long been known as one of Europe’s leading digital technology hubs and serves as a regional base for various global technology companies, including Google, Meta, and Microsoft. Ireland is also one of the world’s leading hubs for the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries.

These sectors reflect the complementary strengths between Indonesia and Ireland. Indonesia offers a large and growing market, an increasingly strong industrial capacity, and various investment opportunities.

Meanwhile, Ireland possesses advantages in technology, expertise, and international business networks that can provide added value to the cooperation between the two nations.
