Indonesia and Greece explore cooperation on migrant workers
Deputy Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI) Christina Aryani highlighted the potential of Indonesian workers during a meeting with Greek Ambassador Dimitrios Michalopoulos in Jakarta on Monday, according to a statement cited on Tuesday.
She noted that employment opportunities are widely available for Indonesian workers in Greece, citing the country’s demand for labor in key sectors, particularly the hospitality industry.
Aryani also sought Greece’s support to advance negotiations on a government-to-government partnership on migrant worker placement through a memorandum of understanding.
“We have also asked the ambassador to convey this agenda to relevant stakeholders in Greece,” she said.
She described the Jakarta meeting as a concrete step in Indonesia’s employment diplomacy to expand access to global job opportunities for Indonesian workers.
“This cooperation is expected to provide a clear and legal pathway for Indonesian workers to pursue professional careers abroad,” she added.
The P2MI Ministry, she said, remains committed to ensuring maximum protection for prospective migrant workers and that all overseas employment opportunities are properly monitored to prevent unsafe and irregular recruitment practices.
The meeting with Ambassador Michalopoulos followed Aryani’s visit to Athens last November, where she met with Greek Deputy Minister of Migration and Asylum Sevi Voloudaki and representatives of recruitment agencies.
In a statement issued after the visit, she said the discussions in Athens had proceeded “very positively,” highlighting Greece’s interest in exploring bilateral cooperation on migrant worker placement.
She added that both sides agreed to immediately begin follow-up talks to draft initial cooperation terms, discuss requirements, and improve job matching mechanisms.
