Indonesia and Germany Agree to Strengthen Partnership in Investment and Employment
President of the Federal Republic of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier met with President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace on Monday, 15 June 2026. The meeting resulted in a number of agreements to be strengthened by both countries.
President Prabowo affirmed that Indonesia and Germany agreed to reinforce the Indonesia-Germany strategic partnership in various fields, ranging from the economy, investment, and energy transition to education and employment.
“In today’s meeting, we discussed strengthening the Indonesia-Germany partnership, particularly in the fields of economy, investment, energy transition, energy security, education, and employment,” Prabowo stated.
In the economic field, Prabowo and Steinmeier agreed to increase the mutually beneficial trade and investment volume between the two countries. Additionally, Prabowo stressed the importance of the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA) reaching a substantive conclusion soon. Prabowo expressed hope that Germany would continue to play an active role in the finalisation process of internal European agreements related to the IEU-CEPA.
“So that it can immediately provide concrete benefits for the business communities in both countries,” he said.
Furthermore, Prabowo noted that cooperation between Indonesia and Germany is also carried out through the Competitiveness Industrial Modernization and Trade Acceleration Program (CITA).
Indonesia, Prabowo said, is inviting Germany to expand investment in key sectors in Indonesia. These include energy transition, downstream industrialisation, vehicles, and semiconductor industry development.
“We also invite Germany to participate in the supply chain of critical minerals and rare earths, as well as in our infrastructure development,” he explained.
On the other hand, the Head of State welcomed the Partnering in Business with Germany programme aimed at MSMEs. Indonesia will also host the second Joint Economic and Investment Committee this year.
“In the health workforce sector, we greatly appreciate the signing of a letter of intent regarding a global skills partnership in nursing. Indonesia also wishes to expand job opportunities for Indonesian workers in Germany, including in the high-tech sector,” he said.
Steinmeier’s visit to Indonesia marks the lead-up to 75 years of bilateral relations between Indonesia and Germany in 2027. Prabowo stated that Steinmeier’s second visit holds significant meaning for Indonesia as it demonstrates the excellent relationship between Germany and Indonesia.
