Indonesia and Germany Agree to Boost Trade and Investment Volume
President Prabowo Subianto and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier have agreed to strengthen the partnership between their nations by increasing trade and investment volume during a bilateral meeting at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday (15/6/2026).
President Prabowo stated that the two countries discussed various strategic cooperation sectors, including the economy, investment, energy transition, energy security, education, and employment.
“At today’s meeting, we discussed strengthening the Indonesia-Germany partnership, particularly in the fields of economy, investment, energy transition, energy security, education, and employment. We agreed to continue increasing mutually beneficial trade and investment volumes,” President Prabowo said.
Regarding Indonesia’s relationship with the European Union, President Prabowo stressed the importance of finalising the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA). He expressed hope that Germany would play an active role in supporting the agreement’s finalisation.
“We hope Germany will continue to play an active role in the process of finalising the internal agreement in Europe, so that it can soon provide concrete benefits for businesses in both countries,” President Prabowo stated.
He also invited German investors to increase investment in various national strategic sectors, including energy transition, downstream industries, transportation, electric vehicles, semiconductors, critical mineral and rare earth supply chains, and infrastructure development. Additionally, the two countries discussed opportunities for developing employment cooperation that could open up opportunities for Indonesian workers in the technology sector.
Meanwhile, President Steinmeier expressed Germany’s support for accelerating the ratification of IEU-CEPA, as it is considered to have significant benefits for the economies of both countries.
“This will enable new investments and also open the way for small and medium-sized enterprises from Germany to invest in Indonesia, leading to increased economic growth and closer cooperation between German and Indonesian companies in the field of innovation,” he explained.
President Steinmeier added that the presence of several German companies in Indonesia demonstrates the high attractiveness of the Indonesian market and highlights the country’s great potential as an investment destination. He also expressed appreciation for the opportunity to discuss with President Prabowo and hoped that bilateral relations between the two countries would continue to develop in the future.
