Indonesia and Europe Strengthen Partnership for Sustainable Transport Development

Jakarta, VIVA – The Indonesian and European governments have once again reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening the development of sustainable, resilient and high-quality transport infrastructure through mutually trusting international partnership.

This was realised through the Indonesia–Europe Roundtable on Sustainable Transport Development, which brought together government representatives, European institutions, development partners, industry players and transport experts.

The event, organised by the Indonesian Railway Society (Maska) and held in conjunction with RailwayTech Indonesia 2026, took place in cooperation with the European Union, the German government and KfW Development Bank, as part of the EU’s Global Gateway initiative.

The Ambassador of the European Union to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam, H.E. Denis Chaibi, said that sustainable transport is a vital foundation for Indonesia’s economic growth, connectivity and green transition.

“Through the Global Gateway strategy, the European Union is committed to mobilising quality investment, sharing European expertise, and building partnerships capable of delivering modern, resilient and low-carbon transport infrastructure,” Denis said in his statement on Wednesday, 29 July 2026.

By bringing together public authorities, development financing institutions and the private sector, he hoped the forum could demonstrate how Indonesia and Europe can translate dialogue into real cooperation, business opportunities and long-term investment.

Meanwhile, the Designated Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Jakarta, Mr Oliver Sperling, said that Germany and Indonesia have built a close and trusting partnership in transport infrastructure development over many years.

“We are proud to support Indonesia’s ambition to achieve sustainable mobility through various initiatives, including the Surabaya Regional Railway Line (SRRL) project,” Oliver said.

As Indonesia moves towards a transport system that is resilient to climate change and oriented towards the future, German and European companies stand ready to cooperate by offering high-quality expertise, innovative technology and sustainable solutions.

“To achieve this goal, dialogue forums such as today’s roundtable play an important role in bringing partners together and encouraging investment that strengthens an efficient, reliable and sustainable public transport system for the public,” he said.
