Indonesia and Emergent Explore Climate Funding to Meet National Emission Targets
The Ministry of Forestry is exploring cooperation with Emergent Forest Finance Accelerator to support Indonesia’s emission reduction efforts in the forestry sector, particularly through the Jurisdictional REDD+ (JREDD+) funding approach. Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni stated that the collaboration is part of Indonesia’s strategy to broaden access to international climate finance, aiming to meet national climate targets while strengthening sustainable forest management and improving community welfare. “We welcome this cooperation with Emergent as an opportunity to explore various international climate funding mechanisms that can support the implementation of Jurisdictional REDD+ in Indonesia,” Minister Antoni said in a statement received in Jakarta on Friday. The understanding, signed during London Climate Action Week 2026, reflects a commitment by both parties to continue constructive discussions on various opportunities and support for mobilising climate finance for forest protection and sustainable management in Indonesia. The discussions cover the potential utilisation of verified emission reductions through the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF), as well as results-based payments and other high-integrity international climate funding schemes. The Minister noted that Indonesia has a strong track record in forest protection and restoration. Through the World Bank-supported FCPF programme, Indonesia has successfully generated verified emission reductions and secured climate funding of US$110 million. This experience, he added, serves as an important foundation for Indonesia to explore new opportunities in carbon markets and high-integrity results-based payment schemes. Minister Antoni also emphasised that the government is continuously strengthening national carbon governance through various policies and regulatory reforms. The government is building a credible, transparent, and accountable carbon market infrastructure to boost investor confidence and ensure that environmental and social benefits are tangibly felt by communities. “Indonesia is committed to delivering measurable and verified emission reductions, while also generating benefits for biodiversity and communities living around forest areas through sustainable forest management,” he said. President and CEO of Emergent, Eron Bloomgarden, expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s leadership in tropical forest protection and climate change mitigation. “With one of the world’s largest tropical forest areas, Indonesia’s efforts in developing Jurisdictional REDD+ provide a significant opportunity to reduce emissions on a large scale while protecting biodiversity and supporting forest-dependent communities,” Bloomgarden said.
