The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Environment, is strengthening its green partnership with the Chinese government, as emphasised during a meeting between Minister of Environment Moh Jumhur Hidayat and China’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, Liu Zhenmin.

According to reports from Jakarta on Friday, Minister Jumhur met with Liu Zhenmin in Jakarta on Thursday (30/7) as a follow-up to the commitment made by both heads of state, which positions environmental cooperation and green development as a primary pillar of the bilateral relationship between Indonesia and China.

“Indonesia believes that environmental protection is not a burden on development, but rather the foundation for sustainable economic growth. Therefore, we are adopting the ‘Growth through Environmental Protection’ paradigm, which aims to build prosperity through environmental preservation, ensuring that the benefits of the green economy are shared fairly by the community,” stated Jumhur during the meeting.

Furthermore, he explained that Indonesia is developing a new approach that integrates mitigation, adaptation, and welfare as the three main pillars of national climate action. This step is being reinforced through the development of carbon markets, biodiversity credits, fair benefit-sharing mechanisms, and the enforcement of climate justice principles.

“The relationship between Indonesia and China has evolved into a mutually beneficial partnership. Moving forward, we hope this cooperation becomes increasingly oriented towards concrete action, innovation, green investment, technology transfer, and capacity building, so that it can provide direct benefits to the people of both nations and contribute to the achievement of the global sustainable development agenda,” said Jumhur.

Responding to this commitment, Liu Zhenmin expressed his appreciation for Indonesia’s leadership and reaffirmed China’s readiness to deepen strategic cooperation.

“China views Indonesia as one of the most important strategic partners in ASEAN and the Global South. We are ready to deepen practical cooperation in the fields of climate change, clean energy, green technology, disaster early warning systems, the circular economy, and environmental protection, while working together to safeguard the interests of developing nations in global climate governance,” explained Liu Zhenmin.

During the meeting, both parties agreed on several focus areas for green collaboration, including promoting increased investment in renewable energy, developing battery-based electric vehicle ecosystems, strengthening the solar panel industry, and enhancing green industry supply chains tailored to national conditions.

Discussions also covered the development of satellite-based and AI-driven disaster early warning systems, tropical rainforest conservation, waste-to-energy management, and biodiversity protection. Additionally, both sides agreed to cooperate on research, expertise exchange, and human resource training to prepare a workforce for the green sector.

Both nations also agreed to strengthen their joint position ahead of international climate conferences, adhering to the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, while urging developed nations to fulfil their commitments regarding climate finance and technology transfer.
