Indonesia and China Focus on Developing AI and Maritime Cooperation
BEIJING, investor.id – The strategic partnership between Indonesia and China has entered a new chapter. Following the first Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue (CSD) in Jakarta on 21 August 2026, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the two countries have agreed to deepen cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) and maritime security.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a press conference in Beijing on Monday (24/8/2026) that the CSD mechanism provides strong institutional support for bilateral relations in the new era. Through this dialogue, Jakarta and Beijing have begun drafting a new Cooperation Action Plan for 2027–2031, replacing the previous action plan (2022–2026).
“The two sides will deepen cooperation in new quality productive forces such as artificial intelligence, accelerate maritime cooperation, and expand environmentally friendly energy and mining partnerships,” Lin Jian said on Monday.
One tangible example of AI cooperation is the trial of a China-developed AI-based meteorological early warning system in Indonesia. The technology is designed to predict and help Indonesia respond to potential extreme climate events.
Beyond technology, the two countries are committed to deepening collaboration in energy, minerals, food security, and poverty reduction.
China affirmed its readiness to help Indonesia transform its natural resource advantages into a key driver of national industrialisation. The Indonesian government also expressed appreciation for the investment climate contributions of Chinese companies, which were deemed mutually beneficial.
In the security sector, the two countries are strengthening their commitment to cross-border law enforcement, including combating online scams, pursuing fugitives, and recovering assets. Both sides also reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace in the South China Sea by accelerating the completion of the Code of Conduct (CoC).
In addition to the CSD led by Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a 2+2 Dialogue Meeting was held involving Indonesian Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Chinese Defence Minister Admiral Dong Jun. The meeting affirmed strengthened cooperation on the “Five Pillars”: economy, people-to-people relations, maritime affairs, politics, and security.
The next CSD forum is scheduled to take place in China in 2027.
Diplomatic relations between Indonesia and China have developed rapidly over the past decade, transforming from traditional economic cooperation into a strategic partnership encompassing high technology and defence. The success of large-scale infrastructure projects such as the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway (Whoosh) under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) framework has become an important foundation for the escalating cooperation between the two countries.
The establishment of new mechanisms such as the Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue (CSD) and the 2+2 Dialogue Forum (Foreign Ministers and Defence Ministers), initiated since mid-2025, marks the strengthening position of Indonesia and China as two important Global South actors.
Amid global geopolitical dynamics, collaboration focused on future technologies such as AI, green energy resilience, and regional maritime stability represents concrete steps by both countries to promote modernisation and sustainable economic growth.
