Indonesia and China explore housing sector cooperation opportunities

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian and Chinese governments are ready to explore strategic cooperation opportunities in the housing sector, including technology transfer, as well as discussions on financing and land.
This was conveyed by the Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP), Maruarar Sirait, following a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China, Ni Hong, in Jakarta on Wednesday.
“We discussed each other’s experiences, both in Indonesia and in China, on how to handle issues in the housing sector, how to tackle the housing backlog for people who do not yet own a home, and also how to address the backlog for people who own a home but one that is unfit for habitation,” said Minister Maruarar.
He said the homeownership backlog remains a major problem. Nationally, the homeownership backlog stands at 9.6 million units, based on the 2025 National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas).
“We also exchanged views on land, financing and technology. Finally, we agreed that there will be follow-up, and we will focus on housing for low- and middle-income communities,” he said.
Furthermore, the man affectionately known as Ara said the three-hour discussion also covered strategic housing programmes in both countries.
Ara underlined effective land provision for urban housing, as well as the development of subsidised housing with an emphasis on green and sustainability aspects.
“For subsidised housing in particular, every house must have one tree for greening,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China, Ni Hong, said the discussions on housing with Indonesia were open and important.
“We are also pleased that, under the direction of the Indonesian and Chinese governments, both countries can create new areas of cooperation in the housing sector. This is because Indonesia is a major trading partner, so it is hoped that cooperation in housing can be elevated to a higher level,” said Minister Ni Hong.
In addition, China will encourage the business community in the Middle Kingdom to take part in developing housing cooperation, so as to ensure good quality.
“Conditions in each country are indeed different, so the challenges experienced and faced will also differ. But we are willing to learn from each other and seek solutions together,” said Minister Ni Hong.
“After this meeting between the two countries, we can certainly create even greater warmth in our close friendship,” he added.
