Indonesia Among Top 5 Countries Using ChatGPT for Learning

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Indonesia is among the five countries worldwide with the highest usage of ChatGPT for educational purposes. This was revealed by Raghav Gupta, Head of Education, Asia Pacific, OpenAI, during a media briefing in Jakarta on Wednesday (8/4/2026). According to Gupta, the level of ChatGPT usage for learning activities in Indonesia is exceptionally high compared to other countries, based on the number of messages sent by users. “Looking at the density of usage for educational and learning activities, Indonesia is among the top five countries in the world in per capita ChatGPT usage for education-related messages,” Gupta stated. He also disclosed that in just one month, the number of learning-related messages sent by users in Indonesia reaches hundreds of millions. Gupta added that the majority of ChatGPT users in Indonesia come from the younger age group. Around 70 percent of users are in the 18 to 34 age range, encompassing university students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as young professionals. Globally, ChatGPT usage has been rapidly increasing since its launch in November 2022. Currently, more than 900 million people use ChatGPT every week. According to Gupta, learning activities are one of the primary uses of ChatGPT in various countries. With a large user base and the dominance of learning activities, ChatGPT is even beginning to be viewed as one of the largest learning platforms in the world. On the other hand, using AI as a shortcut for completing assignments can have negative impacts on the thinking process and quality of learning. Therefore, according to Gupta, it is important for educational institutions to encourage responsible AI usage while enhancing AI literacy among students and educators.
