Indonesia affirms Malay kinship at Thailand's 2026 Malay Clothing Festival
Indonesia’s Songkhla Consulate reaffirmed Malay cultural ties through participation in the 2026 Malay Clothing Festival in Yala, Thailand.
According to Consul Winardy H. Lucky, the festival serves as an important platform to promote Indonesia’s traditional attire, strengthen cultural ties among Malay nations, and encourage creativity and innovation among Malay fashion designers in the region.
“This festival is not merely a celebration of Malay culture but also a reflection of shared historical and cultural identity among Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand,” said Consul Lucky.
The 2026 Malay Clothing Festival, held last weekend, showcased diverse designs emphasising Malay cultural identity from the three countries, blending modern styles while preserving traditional roots.
The consulate facilitated Indonesian designers’ contributions of fabric designs, patterns, and ready-to-wear outfits, he added.
In addition to showcasing Indonesia’s Malay cultural products, the consulate fully supported a special performance by the head of the Dharma Wanita Persatuan at the Indonesian Consulate during the Indonesian Malay fashion show.
The festival also provided a collaborative space for Indonesian, Malaysian, and Thai designers to preserve Malay culture for younger generations and the international community, Consul Lucky said.
“We hope such cultural collaborations will continue to grow and further strengthen mutual understanding and relations among the three nations’ communities,” he said.
The consulate’s participation in the Yala festival is part of Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy in southern Thailand, strengthening community ties through cultural and creative industry promotion.
Promoting Indonesian Malay culture in Yala is appropriate as the region is known in Thailand as a “Malay Language Hub”, especially with local authorities intensifying sustainable and authentic fashion production, Consul Lucky added.
