Indomobil eMotor sales quadruple following fuel price hike

Jakarta - PT Indomobil eMotor Internasional says sales of its electric motorcycles have increased significantly following the rise in fuel prices, amid growing public interest in switching from petrol-powered vehicles to electric ones. Although the company has not yet disclosed total sales figures, CEO Pius Wirawan said it recorded a sales increase of around three to four times compared to the previous period. “Especially after the recent fuel price hike, we saw our sales rise about three to four times,” Pius said after the launch of its newest electric motorcycle, the Tyranno X, at the Jakarta Fair, JIExpo Kemayoran, Jakarta, on Saturday. According to him, this trend is also reflected in the increased activity of trading in conventional motorcycles for electric ones. “We are even anticipating information from colleagues at used-motorcycle showrooms that these showrooms are now somewhat flooded with used bikes because so many people are trying to trade them in for electric motorcycles,” he added. He considers the fuel price increase to be one of the factors encouraging the public to start considering the long-term operational costs of vehicles. In this situation, electric motorcycles are seen as an alternative to reduce daily expenses. Pius also believes public awareness of the benefits of electric motorcycles will continue to grow. According to him, as more people understand electric motorcycles as a more efficient mobility solution, the trend of switching from petrol-powered vehicles has the potential to increase further. “Because not many people are yet aware of electric motorcycles. Once everyone is aware that electric motorcycles are the solution, most petrol motorcycles will be traded in and demand for electric motorcycles will rise, while demand for petrol motorcycles will decrease,” he said. Pius added that the company continues to monitor the development of the national electric vehicle market, which he believes still has significant room for growth in the coming years.
