Indomaret workers have expressed dissatisfaction over changes to the overtime pay scheme for national holidays, which are now being replaced with compensatory leave days. The policy is seen as detrimental to retail staff as it removes additional income from overtime work. Protesters voiced their opposition during a demonstration at the Indomaret Tower in Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK), Penjaringan, North Jakarta, on Tuesday (26 May 2026). ‘The overtime work on public holidays isn’t paid – it’s really painful. It’s a major disappointment for us shop staff because overtime on national holidays is the lifeline of our wages that should be paid,’ one worker told Kompas.com on Tuesday. They also argued the policy contradicts labour regulations. ‘We don’t want to work on public holidays and only get compensatory leave instead. The law clearly states that work on red days must be paid,’ they said. ‘May’s overtime wasn’t paid. Instead, it was replaced with leave,’ the worker added at the protest site. According to them, the removal of overtime pay severely impacts workers’ living expenses. ‘Overtime pay is crucial because not everyone has sufficient household needs or personal obligations. It’s not just about the Rp 400,000 figure, but household needs are more important than assumed,’ said Winda. Meanwhile, Gondo Sudjoni, Customer Relationship Management Executive Director of PT Indomarco Prismatama, stated the company has not fully abolished overtime pay for public holidays. ‘There are some cases where compensatory leave is given, and others where overtime pay is still issued,’ he said during the meeting at Indomaret Tower. ‘The current global economic situation means businesses must balance operations. There needs to be a balance between rights and obligations,’ he added. Gondo further noted that discussions regarding the scheme are ongoing at the Ministry of Manpower (Kemnaker). ‘This is what’s being discussed there (Kemnaker),’ he said. With differing views, the Indomaret overtime dispute remains pending mediation between the company and workers.
