Indomaret Responds to Workers' Opposition to Overtime Pay Replaced with Days Off on Public Holidays
Employees of Indomarco Prismatama, operating as Indomaret, have rejected a policy replacing overtime pay for public holidays with days off. Indomaret has responded to the claims.
The company denies completely removing overtime pay for public holidays, stating there have been minor adjustments to the policy.
“No, it hasn’t been removed. There’s a slight adjustment. Overtime pay is still being provided,” said Gondo Sudjoni, Indomaret’s Customer Relationship Management Executive Director, during an interview at the Indomaret Tower in PIK, North Jakarta, on Tuesday, 26 May 2026.
Gondo explained that some public holiday overtime is still paid, while others are compensated with days off. He attributed the confusion to a misunderstanding between management and staff.
“We are listening to all feedback and will discuss it further. There may have been a misunderstanding or differing perceptions. We have not abolished overtime entirely—some is still paid, while others are replaced with days off,” he said.
Gondo cited deteriorating global economic conditions as the reason for the policy adjustment, stressing the need for business balance.
“Everyone knows the global economic situation requires businesses to maintain equilibrium between rights and obligations. With rising fuel costs, packaging expenses, raw material prices, and operational costs, imbalance would jeopardise the company’s sustainability,” he added.
He denied allegations of intimidation, questioning the company’s incentive to threaten staff.
“No intimidation. Why would the company intimidate employees? Employment contracts outline mutual agreements. If someone disagrees, they can resign. There should be a win-win situation between workers and management,” he stated.
Gondo confirmed that discussions regarding workers’ demands are underway at the Ministry of Manpower (Kemnaker), with union representatives involved.
“Mediation is being facilitated at Kemnaker. Union representatives are present,” he said.
Indomaret employees held a protest at the Indomaret Tower in PIK, North Jakarta, opposing the policy change.
On Tuesday, 26 May 2026, protesters gathered at the tower from 9:40 AM, wearing union insignia. Flags from labour organisations such as the Labour Party and FSPMI were visible, with demonstrators guided by command vehicles.
Chants of “Pay our overtime!” were heard. The protesters, part of the PUK SPAI PT Indomarco Prismatama Tangerang, presented six demands:
Reject all forms of coercion, pressure, and misrepresentation against workers.
Uphold workers’ right to overtime pay.
Reject replacing overtime entitlements with additional days off as per regulations.
Demand company compliance with internal policies and Labour Laws.
Call for strict action against individuals involved in intimidation.
Preserve industrial relations.
