Indictments in Acan case valid
JAKARTA (JP): The Bekasi District Court cleared the way for prosecutors in the Acan gang rape and robbery case yesterday, when the court rejected the objections of the defense.
Presiding judge Pieter Poerba said the indictments brought against the defendants are valid and in accordance with criminal law.
Judge Poerba went on to say that there were no grounds for the defense's objections, which claimed that the indictments refer to inappropriate paragraphs of the criminal code and contain incorrect names and birth dates.
These are only technical matters, most of which have been corrected, said Judge Poerba, who heard the defense's objections yesterday morning.
Eleven men have been accused of involvement in the case of Acan, whose wife and two teenage daughters were raped and robbed last July in a small village in Bekasi, 30 km southeast of here.
Fifteen lawyers are currently defending the 11 men in three separate trials. Yesterday's trial was adjourned until next Thursday, when prosecutors will present their witnesses.(03)
