Indictment in Andri Yunus Case: Coffee Chats Lead to Sulphuric Acid Attack

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Four members of the Indonesian National Armed Forces Strategic Intelligence Agency (Bais TNI) attended the first hearing with the agenda of reading the indictment at the Military Court II-08 Jakarta on Wednesday (29/4/2026). All four are entangled in the case of dousing Vice Coordinator of KontraS, Andri Yunus, with sulphuric acid.

The defendants are: Defendant 1, Sergeant Two (Marine) Edi Sudarko; Defendant 2, First Lieutenant (Marine) Budhi Hariyanto Widhi Cahyono; Defendant 3, Captain (Marine) Nandala Dwi Prasetya; and Defendant 4, First Lieutenant (Quick Reaction Force) Sami Lakka. It was revealed that the four defendants harboured a grudge following the break-in at the Fairmont Hotel room in Jakarta by Andri Yunus on Saturday (15/3/2025). At that time, Andri criticised the closed discussion on the TNI Bill by House of Representatives members held there.

The attack on Andri began on 9 March 2026 around 1:00 p.m. WIB. Defendant 1 and Defendant 2 met at the Al-Iklas Mosque of Bais TNI. At that time, Defendant 1 and Defendant 2 were having a casual chat about personal and official matters. But in the midst of the conversation, Defendant 1 mentioned the viral video of Andri Yunus forcing entry and interrupting the TNI Law revision meeting at the Fairmont Hotel on 16 March 2025. After finishing, Defendant 1 and Defendant 2 returned to the Bais TNI Mess.

“And at that time, Defendant 2 said, ‘we’ll talk about it later’,” said the military prosecutor, Lieutenant Colonel Chk Mohammad Iswadi, during the hearing.

Then on 10 March 2026 around 6:30 p.m. WIB after breaking the fast, Defendant 1 and Defendant 2 were at the Mess drinking coffee while chatting. It was at that moment that Defendant 2 contacted Defendant 4 and invited him to have coffee together at the Mess. However, since Defendant 4 had already gone home, Defendant 4 replied “tomorrow then”. Subsequently, Defendant 1 and Defendant 2 continued chatting until late at night.

The next day, Defendant 3 and Defendant 4 came to Defendant 1’s room at the Bais TNI Denma Mess. Upon arriving at Defendant 1’s room, then Defendant 2, Defendant 3, and Defendant 4 started drinking coffee together while talking. In between the conversation, Defendant 1 expressed his anger towards Andri Yunus, wanting to punch him as a lesson and as a deterrent.

“But Defendant 2 said ‘don’t punch him but just douse him with rust cleaner liquid’, Defendant 1 said ‘I’ll do the dousing’, hearing Defendant 2’s idea, Defendant 3 agreed and said ‘if so, we’ll do it together’,” said Iswadi.

Next, Defendant 1 searched for information via Google about Andri Yunus’s activities. The result was that Andri Yunus had a routine activity, namely the Kamisan event at Monas.

“Hearing that information, Defendant 3 said ‘alright then, tomorrow we’ll go to the location and give a lesson to Mr Andri Yunus’. Then Defendant 3 assigned tasks: Defendant 1 and Defendant 2 to look for Andri Yunus at the Kontras office while Defendant 3 and Defendant 4 to look at YLBHI,” said Iswadi.

On the day of execution, 12 March 2026 around 4:30 p.m. WIB, the defendants departed together from the fourth floor with Defendant 1 and Defendant 2 riding tandem on a black Honda Beat motorcycle with white scooter licence plate F 3151 BY owned by Defendant 3. Meanwhile, Defendant 3 and Defendant 4 used a grey Yamaha Mio Soul motorcycle with licence plate B 3334 CLK owned by Defendant 4. Upon reaching the first floor, Defendant 2 stopped at the ambulance car park of Bais TNI Dekes. At that time, Defendant 1 waited on the motorcycle while Defendant 2 walked to the Denma Bais TNI car workshop.

“Upon arriving at the workshop, Defendant 2 took a used battery located in the corner of the toilet or bathroom and rust cleaner liquid that was in an unlocked safe cabinet, then Defendant mixed both liquids into a purple tumbler glass with a black lid that Defendant 2 brought from the room, next Defendant 2 wrapped the tumbler in a black plastic bag and hung it on the front of the motorcycle,” said Iswadi.
