Indian PM Promises Prambanan Restoration Completion Before 2029
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised that the collaborative project for the conservation and restoration of the Prambanan Temple will be completed before 2029. Modi even ensured that he would return to Indonesia to personally inaugurate the project.
PM Modi expressed this during his visit to the Prambanan Temple in Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, alongside President Prabowo Subianto.
“My friend, President Prabowo, has asked me to promise that we will finish this work before the year 2029, and I need to make another visit to Indonesia to officially inaugurate the temple complex after the restoration,” Modi stated in Yogyakarta on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, as broadcast live on the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel.
Modi believes that with meticulous planning, the cooperation between India and Indonesia could be completed ahead of schedule. The Prambanan Temple restoration programme is a long-term project scheduled to run from 2026 to 2036. The project focuses on the renovation of more than 200 perwara, or ancillary temples, within the Prambanan complex which currently remain in ruins.
“With our joint efforts, we will complete this work before 2029, and together we will celebrate the restoration and its inauguration as a grand festival,” Modi remarked.
On this day, President Prabowo Subianto and Indian PM Narendra Modi officially signed the cooperation agreement for the conservation and renovation of the Prambanan Temple. The signing was conducted by Prabowo and Modi as part of PM Modi’s state visit to Indonesia.
In his press statement, President Prabowo expressed his gratitude for PM Modi’s visit to the country. Prabowo expressed hope that their joint visit to Prambanan would further strengthen the friendship between the peoples of Indonesia and India.
“Culture is a bridge capable of uniting nations, strengthening mutual understanding, and building trust to face the future together,” said Prabowo.
The Chairman of the Gerindra Party welcomed the cooperation between Indonesia and India on the Prambanan Temple restoration project. “On this happy occasion, I welcome the conservation and restoration agreement for the Prambanan Temple complex between the governments of Indonesia and India,” he added.
