Indian PM Promises Prambanan Restoration Completion Before 2029
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised that the cooperation project for the conservation and restoration of Prambanan Temple will be completed before 2029. Modi also confirmed he would return to Indonesia to inaugurate the project in person. PM Modi made these remarks during a visit to the Prambanan Temple in Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, alongside President Prabowo Subianto. “My friend President Prabowo asked me to promise that we will complete this work before 2029 and that I will need to make another visit to Indonesia to inaugurate the temple complex after restoration,” Modi said in Yogyakarta on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, as broadcast live on the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel. Modi expressed confidence that with careful planning, the cooperation between India and Indonesia could be completed ahead of schedule. The restoration cooperation programme for Prambanan Temple is a long-term project originally scheduled to run from 2026 to 2036. The project focuses on the restoration of more than 200 perwara, or companion temples, within the Prambanan Temple complex that are currently in ruins. “With our joint efforts, we will complete this work before 2029 and together we will celebrate the restoration and inauguration as a grand festival,” Modi stated. Earlier that day, President Prabowo Subianto and PM Narendra Modi officially signed the conservation and restoration cooperation agreement for Prambanan Temple. The signing was conducted as part of PM Modi’s state visit to Indonesia. In his press statement, President Prabowo expressed his gratitude for PM Modi’s visit to the country. He expressed hope that their joint visit to Prambanan Temple would further strengthen the friendship between the peoples of Indonesia and India. “Culture is a bridge that can unite nations, strengthen mutual understanding, and build trust to face the future together,” Prabowo said. The Gerindra Party chairman welcomed the cooperation between Indonesia and India on the Prambanan Temple restoration project.
