Indian PM Modi to Worship at Prambanan Temple During State Visit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside President Prabowo Subianto, will conduct a visit to the Prambanan Temple. During the visit, PM Modi will also take the opportunity to perform religious prayers at the temple complex.

“Prime Minister Modi will also make time to perform worship at the Prambanan Temple complex,” stated the Minister of State Secretary, Prasetyo Hadi, to reporters on Wednesday (8/7/2026).

During the inauguration, Prabowo and PM Modi are expected to sign a cooperation agreement for the conservation of Prambanan, noting its status as a World Heritage site and the largest Hindu temple in the region.

“As one of the largest Hindu temple sites and a UNESCO World Heritage site, one of the agendas includes the signing of a cooperation agreement for the conservation of the Prambanan Temple,” he added.

PM Modi is highly interested in the revitalisation of Prambanan Temple.

The Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, previously revealed that the Indian Government’s plan for the restoration of Prambanan Temple had been communicated by Narendra Modi over a year ago. Fadli noted that the revitalisation will focus on the smaller temples, known as ‘candi perwara’, within the Prambanan area.

“Indeed, this was communicated by Prime Minister Modi one and a half years ago. Now, tomorrow, he will personally inspect the Prambanan Temple,” Fadli told reporters at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday (7/7).

“There is a quarter of the Prambanan Temple area, specifically the Perwara temples—the smaller temples—that we have not yet revitalised,” he continued.

Fadli mentioned that out of approximately 200 Perwara temples, the government has only revitalised six. He welcomed the restoration cooperation with the Indian government.

“Out of those hundreds, only six have been revitalised. The three main temples have all been completed. Therefore, we certainly welcome the desire from the Indian side to support us in revitalising Hindu temples, specifically Prambanan Temple,” he said.

Fadli stated that PM Modi is very interested in following up on the Prambanan revitalisation cooperation because it is one of the largest Hindu temples, featuring three main temples and hundreds of Perwara temples.
