Indian PM Modi Pledges to Complete Prambanan Temple Restoration Before 2029
Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has reaffirmed his commitment to working alongside the Indonesian government to finalise the restoration of the Prambanan Temple Complex. The target for completing the conservation project of this historic site is set for before the year 2029.
Modi made the statement following a direct inspection of the temple complex alongside Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Central Java on Wednesday (8/7). The visit is part of a series of state visits by PM Modi to Indonesia during his three-day itinerary.
Modi emphasised that the restoration of Prambanan is not merely a physical project, but a tangible manifestation of the deep relationship between Indonesia and India that has existed for over 1,200 years. He views Prambanan as a symbol of a living civilisation that continues to connect both nations to the present day.
“Today, my friend, President Prabowo, has made me promise that we will complete this work before 2029. I will return to Indonesia to inspect the temple complex once the restoration is finished,” said Modi.
He also added that the completion of this restoration will eventually be celebrated as a major festival, marking the success of the joint efforts of both nations in preserving world cultural heritage.
During his visit, PM Modi took the opportunity to offer prayers in the temple area dedicated to Lord Shiva, Goddess Durga, and Lord Ganesha. He described the spiritual experience as one of the most sacred moments of his life, particularly as it was shared alongside President Prabowo.
Modi also expressed high appreciation for the Indonesian people, who have preserved the integrity of Prambanan for centuries. According to him, the spiritual values and reliefs found within the area serve as authentic evidence of the historical links between India and Indonesia.
Beyond the cultural aspects, PM Modi believes that the ongoing conservation process will strengthen Prambanan’s position as a global tourist destination. He predicts a significant surge in the number of tourists and pilgrims travelling from India to Indonesia once the restoration is complete.
At the conclusion of his visit, Modi praised the attention to detail shown by President Prabowo throughout the visit agenda. On behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India, he expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome and the close cooperation demonstrated by the Indonesian government.
Through this collaboration, it is hoped that the bilateral relationship between the two nations will become increasingly robust, bringing progress and prosperity to the people of both sides.
