Indian PM Modi Pledges to Complete Prambanan Temple Restoration Before 2029

Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has affirmed his commitment to cooperating with the Indonesian government to complete the restoration of the Prambanan Temple complex. The target for finishing the conservation project for this historic site is set before 2029. The statement was made by Modi after conducting a direct inspection of the complex alongside Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Central Java on Wednesday (8/7). The visit was part of PM Modi’s three-day state visit to Indonesia. Modi stressed that the restoration of Prambanan is not merely a physical project, but a tangible manifestation of the profound relationship between Indonesia and India, which has been established for over 1,200 years. He views Prambanan as a living symbol of civilisation that continues to connect the two nations to this day. “Today, my friend President Prabowo made me promise that we will complete this work before 2029. I will return to Indonesia to review the temple complex after the restoration is finished,” Modi stated. He added that the completion of the restoration would be celebrated as a major festival, marking the success of the joint efforts of both countries in preserving world cultural heritage. During his visit, PM Modi took time to offer prayers in the area of the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, Goddess Durga, and Lord Ganesha. He described the spiritual experience as one of the most sacred moments of his life, particularly because it was done alongside President Prabowo. Modi also expressed high appreciation to the Indonesian people for preserving Prambanan over the centuries. According to him, the spiritual values and reliefs in the area are authentic evidence of the historical links between India and Indonesia. Beyond the cultural aspect, PM Modi believes that the ongoing conservation efforts will strengthen Prambanan’s position as a global tourist destination. He predicted a significant surge in the number of tourists and pilgrims from India to Indonesia once the restoration is complete. At the end of his visit, Modi praised the detailed attention given by President Prabowo during the agenda. He expressed gratitude on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India for the warm welcome and close cooperation shown by the Indonesian government. Through this collaboration, it is hoped that bilateral relations between the two countries will grow stronger, bringing progress and prosperity to the people of both nations.
