An Indian national, SN, was found dead in the detention centre of the Surabaya Immigration Office on Thursday (14/5) morning. SN had been held by authorities for allegedly violating immigration regulations by overstaying his visa.

The head of the Surabaya Immigration Office, Agus Winarto, confirmed the incident. He explained that officers found SN dead during a routine inspection of the detention centre at around 07:50 WIB.

“We express our condolences for this incident. We are currently coordinating with law enforcement and relevant agencies to ensure that all processes are carried out in accordance with regulations,” Agus said in an official statement on Friday (15/5).

The case involving SN began with a report from the UPTD Perlindungan Perempuan dan Anak (PPA) of Sidoarjo Regency. The report concerned family issues and the fulfillment of children’s rights involving a foreign national. After immigration officers examined the documents, it was found that SN was using a Limited Stay Permit (Izin Tinggal Kunjungan).

However, SN was found to have violated Article 78 Paragraph (3) of Law Number 6 of 2011 concerning Immigration by exceeding his stay permit by 248 days. On May 6, 2026, SN came to the Immigration Office accompanied by the UPTD PPA Sidoarjo and admitted to the violation.

Based on this violation, the Immigration Office imposed an Administrative Immigration Action in the form of detention, which began on May 11, 2026. “This detention was carried out while waiting for the deportation schedule, which was originally planned for May 17,” Agus added.

In response to the discovery of the body, the Surabaya Immigration Office took several strategic steps, including:

In addition to external measures, the Surabaya Immigration Office also conducted a thorough internal evaluation of the standard security procedures in the detention centre. Agus emphasised that the welfare of SN’s child remains a top priority through ongoing coordination with relevant agencies.

“We are committed to handling this matter professionally, transparently and accountably until all legal and administrative processes are completed,” he concluded. (I-2)

The Sidoarjo Police have revealed the results of the autopsy of the Indian national who died at the Surabaya Immigration Office. The victim was found to have died by suicide due to economic depression and child custody issues.
