Indian dance troupe due here
JAKARTA (JP): India's Kathak dance troupe Kadamb is slated to perform at the Golden Ballroom of the Hilton Hotel on at 7 p.m. on Dec. 27.
The one-night show is sponsored by the Jawaharlal Nehru Indian Cultural Centre in collaboration with the Women International Club (WIC) in Jakarta.
The cultural center's director, J.A. Khan, said yesterday that the troupe, which has just performed at the Festival of India in Thailand, will travel from Jakarta for performances in Semarang, Central Java, and Surabaya, East Java.
The troupe is led by Mrs. Kumudini Lakhia, who has won several prestigious awards in India and abroad, including the Padma Shri award in 1987.
The word kathak comes from the root 'katha', which means story. The Kathaks were originally a caste of story-tellers-cum- musicians who were attached to temples in certain parts of northern India.
The show in Jakarta will be exclusively for WIC members and special guests from Indonesia's Indian community, J.A. Khan said. (sur)
