India may buy RI gas

NEW DELHI (Reuter): Indian Oil Minister Satish Sharma said on Monday that India was considering importing natural gas from Burma, Indonesia and Qatar to meet rising domestic demand.

India has already signed an agreement with Oman to supply 56 million cubic metres of gas per day, a deal signed in September 1994. It is also considering importing gas from Iran.

"India will still have a large unfulfilled demand for natural gas. We are, therefore, considering the import of gas and LNG (liquefied natural gas) from countries such as Myanmar (Burma), Indonesia, Qatar, etc," Sharma told a gas conference in the Indian capital.

India produces about 55 million cubic metres of gas per day against a registered demand of about 260 million cubic metres per day, he said.
