India invites Indonesia to expand AI cooperation within BRICS
Jakarta (ANTARA) - India is encouraging Indonesia to strengthen artificial intelligence (AI) partnerships within the BRICS framework so that the technology can be more widely applied to healthcare, agriculture, SMEs, and the general public.
India’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Sandeep Chakravorty, stated that both nations have significant opportunities to enhance AI cooperation through applications that provide direct benefits to society.
“We should work together on the implementation of AI in the fields of healthcare and agriculture. We have also explored the application of AI solutions for SMEs and the business world,” Chakravorty said in a special written interview with ANTARA regarding India’s BRICS Presidency, Friday.
He explained that AI is a vital component of the innovation pillar, which is one of the four priority pillars of India’s BRICS Presidency this year. The other three pillars are resilience, cooperation, and sustainability.
According to Chakravorty, one area of AI that could be optimised jointly by Indonesia and India is language technology to bridge communication for populations using different languages. This cooperation is considered vital for Indonesia and India, both of which possess immense linguistic diversity and hold some of the largest numbers of languages in the world.
“We can collaborate on language technology, specifically technology that makes AI increasingly accessible to communities speaking diverse languages,” said the Indian Ambassador.
To support this, universities and researchers from both countries need to strengthen partnerships through joint research, particularly in the field of AI, he added.
The Indian Ambassador also encouraged policymakers from both nations to increase interaction to exchange experiences and expertise to ensure responsible AI governance.
“We have also established a Joint Working Group on Digital Technology, which is authorised to review this cooperation sector,” he added.
The 18th BRICS Summit is scheduled to take place in New Delhi, India, on 12-13 September 2026. This international cooperation forum carries the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability” this year.
Indonesia joined BRICS as a member on 6 January 2025. The member nations of BRICS include Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Indonesia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia.
