India’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Sandeep Chakravorty, has expressed hope that the integration of Indonesia’s Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) with India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) will be finalised by the end of 2026. The statement was made during a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday evening, held in conjunction with the ongoing state visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Indonesia. “I hope that by the end of this year we will see the realisation of the integration between QRIS and UPI,” he said. According to Chakravorty, technical discussions regarding the integration are currently underway between payment system operators in Indonesia and their counterparts in India. He noted that the technological integration process has reached a very advanced stage. “We hope these discussions and the technological integration can be completed soon. So, the process is still ongoing, but it is at a very advanced stage,” he explained. The ambassador stated that the leaders of both Indonesia and India have expressed a desire for the payment system integration to be realised promptly. This directive, he added, serves as an impetus for the negotiating parties to accelerate the completion of the integration process. “Given that both leaders have expressed the wish for this process to be realised soon, I am confident this directive has been passed on to the parties involved in the negotiations to complete them,” Chakravorty said. Earlier the same day at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, Prime Minister Modi and President Prabowo Subianto announced the plan to integrate the two countries’ payment systems. Modi assessed that if the two systems are integrated, it could enhance interactions between the people of both nations while simultaneously boosting Indonesia-India economic transactions. If successfully implemented, Indonesia’s QRIS code could be used for transactions in India, while QR codes from India’s UPI digital payment ecosystem could be used in Indonesia.
