India Blocks Meta's WhatsApp Username Feature Pending Detailed Explanation
The Indian government has instructed US technology firm Meta to refrain from launching a new username feature on WhatsApp in the country. Authorities have requested a detailed explanation of the feature within three days and directed the company not to proceed with the rollout until consultations are complete. Officials warned that the feature could increase the risk of online fraud, phishing, digital arrest scams, and identity impersonation on the messaging platform. The government also asked Meta to clarify why action should not be taken against WhatsApp under India’s Information Technology Act and related regulations. The proposed feature would allow WhatsApp users to connect using unique usernames instead of sharing their phone numbers, with a phased introduction planned over the coming months.
