India, Australia Sign Uranium Export Pact
New Delhi (ANTARA) - India and Australia on Thursday (9 July) signed a pact to facilitate uranium exports as both nations pledged to deepen defence and security cooperation.
The signing took place as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Melbourne, where he was welcomed by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for a leaders’ summit.
A joint statement released after the meeting said the leaders welcomed “the signing of an administrative arrangement to enable the export of uranium to India for peaceful purposes under the 2015 Australia-India Nuclear Cooperation Agreement.”
“This arrangement facilitates the export of Australian uranium to India to help increase the share of non-fossil fuel electricity generation capacity, providing an additional market for Australia’s resources sector,” the statement said.
Albanese said: “We look forward to being a reliable and trusted supplier of uranium to India.”
The two leaders “reaffirmed that defence and security cooperation is a cornerstone of the partnership in an increasingly complex strategic environment.”
Australia-India relations were elevated to a “comprehensive strategic partnership” in June 2020.
India is also Australia’s fifth-largest trading partner, with two-way trade in services and goods worth US$54.4 billion (Rp982.5 trillion) in 2024-2025.
