Independence Reflection: Himapolindo Urges Students to Become Conflict Mediators

The commemoration of Indonesia’s Independence Day has become a moment for critical reflection and national consolidation for students. The Indonesian Political Science Student Association (Himapolindo), representing the aspirations of 42 universities across Indonesia, has issued a call for national unity and rejected all forms of anarchism that could divide the nation. This joint appeal emerged as a response to contemporary socio-political dynamics. The move also affirms the position of political science students as guardians of democracy based on intellectuality and the constitution.

Central Coordinator of Himapolindo Rosyad Fauzi from the University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta (UMJ) stressed that this year’s independence reflection must be interpreted as an effort to strengthen the foundations of nationhood and to fill independence with substance. “Our homework at present is to fill independence with something tangible, not merely rhetoric to gain attention from the media and the public, such as narratives of seizing independence that have no impact on public welfare,” said Rosyad in a statement on Tuesday (18/8).

Rosyad added that amid sharp polarisation and the potential for social friction, students are required to become mediators of conflict, not triggers of tension. “Independence was achieved through unity, so safeguarding and nurturing it is our collective and absolute responsibility. The 42 universities that are members of Himapolindo are fully committed to maintaining a healthy, conducive and peaceful democratic climate,” he said.

In addition to calling for unity, the national forum of political science students highlighted the importance of conveying aspirations in an orderly manner. Himapolindo representative from UPN Veteran Jakarta, Aji Gilang Santoso, expressed a firm stance against all acts of anarchism in public spaces that could potentially damage public facilities and harm the community. “Himapolindo, together with other student movements as instruments of political movements, considers that anything with the potential to cause damage and harm to the public must be prevented, and we will oppose all forms of anarchism in public spaces that could potentially increase friction between communities,” said Aji.

Meanwhile, Saldi from UIN Alauddin Makassar stated that criticism must be based on data. He invited students to remain critical of government policies and the state of law enforcement through academic forums and legitimate constitutional channels. He also urged all elements of youth and society not to be easily provoked by issues deliberately designed to divide unity. “Once again we emphasise that demonstrations or street actions must continue to prioritise ethics, order, and avoid acts of violence,” said Saldi.

Through this reflection movement, Himapolindo hopes that the role of students as agents of change and social control can proceed hand in hand with the government to realise a more advanced, just, prosperous and sovereign Indonesia.
