Increasingly Sophisticated: Apple Prepares Special iCloud+ Subscription for AI Features

Apple has signalled that it will soon release a specific variant of the iCloud+ subscription package designed to support the use of artificial intelligence (AI) features. This move is an effort to support the increasingly intensive use of Apple Intelligence while covering the cloud computing costs required to run generative AI features.

This statement was made by Apple CEO Tim Cook during the company’s financial earnings conference. Cook stated that Apple sees an opportunity for users who utilise Apple Intelligence intensively to “move up to a higher level of service” through iCloud+ packages. However, the company has not yet disclosed the pricing or the launch schedule for this new package.

Apple Intelligence is designed to run most AI processes directly on-device. However, for more complex tasks, Apple utilises Private Cloud Compute, a cloud infrastructure that prioritises user privacy. According to Apple, this approach allows users to enjoy various AI features such as Live Translation, Visual Intelligence, Genmoji, Image Playground, and enhanced Siri capabilities without compromising personal data security.

As more AI features are processed in the cloud, the demand for computing power that Apple must provide increases. A report from The Verge suggests that the new iCloud+ package will likely target power users—those who frequently use Siri AI, writing assistants, image generation, and other AI tools that require server-side processing.

Tim Cook explained that Apple Intelligence will remain free for most users. However, subscribers requiring greater AI usage capacity will eventually be able to purchase higher-tier subscription packages. “If customers use the service more, we believe they will be willing to upgrade their plans,” Cook told investors.

Indications of AI monetisation have been visible since Apple introduced Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2022. Apple explained that several cloud-based AI features have daily usage limits because they require significant server resources. Furthermore, some of the latest features already require specific iCloud+ subscriptions; for example, AI features within the Home app for security cameras require a 2 TB iCloud+ capacity.

This reinforces the assumption that Apple will position iCloud+ as the primary gateway for premium AI services in the future. According to a report from Macworld, the plan to introduce a special AI-focused iCloud+ package shows that Apple is developing a new business model for Apple Intelligence services. Rather than charging directly for each AI feature, Apple is expected to increase the value of iCloud+ packages by offering larger AI usage quotas for premium subscribers. This strategy could further strengthen Apple’s Services business, which remains one of the company’s largest revenue sources alongside hardware sales. Nevertheless, Apple has not yet confirmed when the special AI iCloud+ package will be officially introduced to the public.
