Increase in Ad Hoc Judge Allowances Hoped to Enhance Professionalism and Uphold Judicial Morality
Jakarta - The government’s decision to increase allowances for ad hoc judges has received a positive response from several legal experts. Professor of Law at Al Azhar Indonesia University, Suparji Ahmad, hopes that the raise in ad hoc judge allowances will enhance the professionalism of judges. “Appreciation to the President for realising his commitment. It is hoped that the salary increase will improve the professionalism of judges in carrying out their duties and authority,” Suparji told Kompas.com on Tuesday (5/5/2026). He hopes that the resolution of cases in court can be completed more quickly with regularity and certainty in hearings. “Morality must be upheld, not compromised or held captive by political, economic, legal, and social forces,” he said. He also highlighted several rogue judges who have been embroiled in legal cases due to the cases they handled. With the facilities and guarantees provided by the state at present, it is hoped that there will be no more judges who abuse their authority. “(It is hoped) there will be no more judges caught up in cases because of alleged interactions in handling cases,” he stated. Meanwhile, legal expert from Parahyangan University, Agustinus Pohan, views the issuance of Presidential Regulation No. 5 of 2026 as a consequence of the increase in judge allowances. In addition, he believes that the current amount of ad hoc judge allowances will attract the interest of the younger generation to pursue a career as intelligent and idealistic judges. “This is certainly very positive in relation to recruitment. So we wait for the long-term effects,” he said.
