JAKARTA (Antara): PT International Nickel Indonesia (INCO) is planning to build nickel processing plants in Bahodopi, Central Sulawesi, and Pomala, Southeast Sulawesi, before 2010, its president director, Arief Siregar, said.

The construction of the plants would cost US$500 million each, Arief said after an extraordinary meeting of the company's shareholders on Wednesday.

However, he stopped short of revealing where the funds needed to build the facilities would come from.Construction of the Bahodopi plant would come first, he said adding the company was conducting a feasibility study on the type of nickel there.

"The production capacity of the plant will depend on the type of nickel to be processed," he said.

Under its contract of work signed with the government in 1990, PT INCO is obliged to build a nickel processing plant.

He further said the company had yet to decide whether or not it would stop supplying nickel ore to mining company PT Aneka Tambang once the construction of the Pomala plant was completed.

So far, INCO has been supplying nickel ore from its mining concession in Pomala to Antam. (***)
