Inaugural Tarawih Prayers at IKN State Mosque Broadcast Live
The State Mosque in the Nusantara national capital (IKN) held its inaugural tarawih prayers since its construction. The mosque has the capacity to accommodate tens of thousands of worshippers.
In a live broadcast on the IKN Indonesia YouTube channel on Wednesday (18/2/2026), the main prayer hall was seen packed with worshippers. The rows to the right behind the imam were occupied by male congregants, whilst those on the left were filled by female congregants.
The walls of the main prayer hall featured brown and gold tones. At the imam’s station, gold ornaments were visible, adorned with calligraphy of Allah and Muhammad on the right and left sides.
Previously, Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs Romo Muhammad Syafi’i confirmed that the State Mosque at IKN was ready for use during tarawih prayers throughout Ramadan. The Deputy Minister personally inspected the facility and led the dawn congregational prayer there on Thursday (12/2).
“We are grateful to be able to work and conduct this inspection today. We carried out this inspection to ensure the mosque’s readiness, particularly ahead of the planned tarawih prayers at the start of Ramadan in the IKN area,” said the Deputy Minister, as quoted from the official Ministry of Religious Affairs website on Thursday (12/2/2026).
The Deputy Minister also revealed that Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar planned to perform tarawih prayers and deliver a sermon at the IKN Mosque on the 2nd of Ramadan 1447 H.
The IKN Mosque has been designed as one of the principal religious activity centres in the new capital. Efry Biaktama Meliala of the East Kalimantan Building, Infrastructure and Area Planning Agency (BPBPK) under the Ministry of Public Works explained that the mosque’s initial capacity stands at approximately 29,000 worshippers. In future, this capacity will be expanded to accommodate roughly 60,000 worshippers.
The presence of a Ramadan Plaza surrounding the mosque is expected to serve as a supporting space for community activities during the fasting month, whilst strengthening the area’s function as a centre for social and economic interaction.
