JAKARTA - The consistency of companies in implementing sustainable business practices has once again been tested through environmental assessments, and PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum) has broken into the highest category by securing the PROPER Gold and Green 2025 awards.

The awards were given for the operations of the Smelting Plant (ISP), which received PROPER Gold, and the Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA/IPP) operations, which obtained PROPER Green.

The presentation of the awards was carried out directly by the Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah on 7 April 2026.

In his speech, Hanif emphasised that PROPER has now developed into an instrument that drives business transformation.

“PROPER is no longer just an administrative evaluation tool. PROPER is the engine of transformation that encourages companies not only to comply but to exceed compliance through innovation, resource efficiency, and real contributions to society,” he said, via a press release on Friday (10/4/2026).

Inalum’s President Director, Melati Sarnita, stated that this award reflects the company’s long-term strategy in integrating sustainability aspects.

“We interpret this achievement of PROPER Gold and Green as a reflection of Inalum’s long-term commitment to placing sustainability at the core of our business strategy. Our efforts are not only focused on compliance but also on creating value through the integration of measurable and impactful environmental, social, and governance (ESG) aspects,” Melati said.

Historically, Inalum has recorded consistent performance in PROPER. The Gold ranking was achieved for the Kuala Tanjung Smelting Plant in 2022, 2024, and 2025, as well as for the Paritohan PLTA operations in 2023. Meanwhile, PROPER Green has also been repeatedly achieved by PLTA operations in 2022, 2024, and 2025.

This performance is supported by various environmental innovations, ranging from energy and resource efficiency, waste management, to operational process optimisation. The company also develops a circular economy approach through the utilisation of waste into valuable products.

This achievement simultaneously strengthens Inalum’s position as a strategic industry that combines business performance with environmental and social sustainability.

At the national level, PROPER serves as a government instrument to assess and encourage corporate compliance through public information disclosure.

In 2026, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry determined that dozens of companies from various sectors achieved PROPER Gold, while 243 companies obtained PROPER Green, out of a total of 5,476 companies assessed, marking an increase of 22 percent compared to the previous year.

Deputy for Pollution Control and Environmental Damage at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Rasio Ridho Sani, explained that PROPER functions not only as a monitoring tool but also as guidance for companies.

Nevertheless, of all the companies assessed, 2,437 were declared compliant, while 2,886 did not meet the requirements, and 153 companies were non-operational. Looking ahead, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry plans to expand the scope of PROPER with the support of an artificial intelligence-based system to enhance monitoring.
