Inalum Achieves Beyond Compliance Status, Wins Gold and Green PROPER Awards
PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum) has once again affirmed its commitment to sustainable business practices by achieving Gold and Green ratings in the 2025 Programme for Assessing Company Performance in Environmental Management (PROPER). The Gold rating was awarded for the operations of the Smelter Plant (ISP), while the Green rating was obtained for the operations of the Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA/IPP). The awards were presented directly by the Minister of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, who emphasised that PROPER has now evolved into an instrument for transformation in the business world. According to him, PROPER is no longer merely a tool for evaluating administrative compliance but encourages companies to exceed standards through innovation, resource efficiency, and tangible contributions to society. In the 2024-2025 period, the number of PROPER participants reached 5,476 companies, a 22 per cent increase compared to the previous year. However, only 282 companies successfully entered the beyond-compliance category, including Inalum. Inalum’s President Director, Melati Sarnita, stated that this achievement reflects the consistent integration of sustainability into the company’s business strategy. “The company not only focuses on compliance but also on creating value through the implementation of measurable environmental, social, and governance (ESG) aspects,” said Melati in a written statement on Thursday (9/4). Historically, Inalum has recorded stable PROPER performance. The Gold rating was achieved for the Kuala Tanjung Smelter Plant in 2022, 2024, and 2025, as well as for the Paritohan PLTA operations in 2023. Meanwhile, the Green rating has also been consistently achieved by PLTA operations in recent years. “This performance is supported by various environmental innovation initiatives, ranging from energy efficiency, waste management, to optimisation of operational processes to enhance sustainability,” added Melati. On the social side, the company implements community empowerment programmes based on a Social Return on Investment (SROI) approach. One flagship programme, “From Waste to Blessing”, serves as an example of integrating environmental benefits and economic value for the surrounding community. This achievement strengthens INALUM’s position as a strategic industry player that is not only oriented towards business performance but also towards environmental sustainability and social welfare. Moving forward, INALUM is committed to continuously improving ESG standards and strengthening collaboration with stakeholders in supporting the clean energy transition and sustainable development in Indonesia.
