Inactive Ponorogo Regent Sugiri Sancoko Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison
Inactive Ponorogo Regent Sugiri Sancoko has been sentenced to seven years in prison in a case of alleged bribery and gratuities related to the buying and selling of positions and projects at the dr. Harjono Regional General Hospital (RSUD) in Ponorogo, East Java. During the sentencing hearing at the Surabaya Corruption Court in Sidoarjo on Tuesday, the public prosecutor from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) also demanded Sugiri pay a fine of Rp300 million and restitution amounting to Rp6.7 billion. “We demand the defendant Sugiri Sancoko be sentenced to seven years in prison, reduced by the time already served in detention,” said KPK prosecutor Arjuna Budi Tambunan. In the indictment, the prosecutor stated Sugiri was legally and convincingly proven to have committed corruption by accepting bribes and gratuities as a state official. Alongside Sugiri, the prosecutor also read out the sentence for former Ponorogo Regency Regional Secretary Agus Pramono, who received a sentence of 4 years and 8 months in prison along with restitution of Rp975 million. Meanwhile, the former Director of RSUD dr. Harjono Ponorogo, dr. Yunus Mahatma, was sentenced to 5 years and 6 months in prison and ordered to pay restitution of Rp300 million. The prosecutor stated Sugiri fulfilled the elements of a state official receiving gifts or money related to his position. Based on court facts, Sugiri allegedly received at least Rp900 million from dr. Yunus Mahatma through Agus Pramono to retain the position of Director of RSUD dr. Harjono, Ponorogo. The money was given in two stages: Rp400 million in February 2025 and Rp500 million in November 2025. The prosecutor also revealed the receipt of money allegedly originating from a contractor for the RSUD dr. Harjono facility construction project. Businessman Sucipto allegedly gave approximately Rp1.15 billion to Sugiri through Yunus Mahatma and other parties as a reward for the hospital construction project. This case is a development from a KPK sting operation on 7 November 2025 that ensnared four suspects: Sugiri Sancoko, Agus Pramono, Yunus Mahatma, and private party Sucipto. Following the sentencing, the panel of judges adjourned the trial and scheduled the next hearing for the delivery of the defence plea from the defendants and their legal counsel teams.
