Inactive Madiun Mayor Maidi Faces 7-Year Prison Sentence Demand
Surabaya (ANTARA) - Prosecutors from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) have demanded a prison sentence of 7 years and 2 months, along with a fine of Rp205 million (subsidiary to 90 days of imprisonment), for the inactive Mayor of Madiun, Maidi, in relation to alleged corruption and gratification totalling Rp10.7 billion.
“In addition to that demand, the defendant, Maidi, is required to pay restitution of Rp8 billion; if he is unable to pay, his assets will be confiscated, and if they are insufficient, it will be replaced by 5 years of imprisonment,” stated KPK Prosecutor Palupi Wiryrand during a session at the Surabaya Corruption Court in Sidoarjo on Thursday.
The total value of the corruption consists of alleged extortion disguised as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds for the Winongo Landfill (TPA) project amounting to Rp1.7 billion, as well as alleged gratification in the form of commitment fees from projects within the Madiun City Public Works, Housing, and Settlement (PUPR) Department exceeding Rp9 billion.
According to the prosecutor, the defendant, Maidi, was proven in the first indictment to have violated Article 12 letter E of the Anti-Corruption Law and in the second indictment, Article 12 B of the Anti-Corruption Law.
The trial, presided over by Chief Judge Ernawati in the Candra Room, featured the defendant Maidi, the former Head of the Madiun City PUPR Department Thariq Megah, and a private individual trusted by Maidi, Rochim Ruhdiyanto.
Prosecutors revealed that Maidi allegedly abused his authority as the Mayor of Madiun by requiring parties processing permits in the Madiun City Government to deposit money to his trusted associate, Robi Suprianto, under the pretext of CSR or corporate social responsibility funds.
The prosecution stated that this practice contravened Madiun City Regional Regulation Number 42 of 2018 concerning Corporate Social Responsibility and Madiun Mayor Regulation Number 85 of 2020 regarding its implementing guidelines.
Meanwhile, Maidi’s legal counsel, Iqbal Syarifudin, stated that they would study the KPK prosecutor’s demands as several facts from the trial have yet to be presented.
“In our view, the demand still needs to be corrected in the plea that we will present next week,” he said. His team intends to provide a response through a plea to offer a perspective to the panel of judges to ensure a fair verdict for Maidi.
