In Welcome of Jakarta's 499th Anniversary, Residents Encouraged to Actively Sort Waste at Home

The Jakarta Provincial Government held the Declaration of the Waste Sorting Movement at the Pedestrian Plaza Festival on Jalan H.R. Rasuna Said, Setiabudi, South Jakarta. The event also marked the launch of the 499th Anniversary of Jakarta. Secretary of the DKI Jakarta DPRD, Augustinus, stated that the activity represents the provincial government’s commitment to strengthening a clean living culture. This step is expected to increase public and civil servant awareness of the importance of waste management from its source. According to him, the declaration is a crucial measure to maintain the cleanliness of the capital. “The DKI Provincial Government, especially the governor, has declared ‘Keep Jakarta Clean’ for waste sorting,” said Augustinus on Sunday (10/5/2026). He added that efforts to preserve the environment must start with building a clean living culture in society and government work environments. “The main point is our culture of maintaining cleanliness,” said the man familiarly known as Aga. The Jakarta Provincial Government also commits to supporting the waste sorting programme by providing public facilities, including bins for organic and non-organic waste in various locations. “The government’s commitment is to implement the Waste Sorting Programme by preparing its public facilities,” Aga stated. The movement is hoped to instil disciplined habits among civil servants in disposing of waste according to its type. This is particularly important given the current serious condition of the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) due to the high volume of waste. “DKI civil servants must set an example in waste disposal and sorting,” Aga said. According to him, the declaration can serve as education on the importance of waste sorting. Its implementation must be consistent by all civil servants and the public to maintain Jakarta’s cleanliness. “We have seen that Bantargebang is already piling up very high. Therefore, serious handling is needed to reduce waste in Jakarta,” Aga added.
